Steel Ladle Refractory Solutions

HarbisonWalker International is one of the largest domestic manufacturers of steel ladle refractories. Our steel ladle refractory solutions are customized based on shop-specific conditions to optimize refractory performance and improve safety, refractory life and yield.

We provide high-performance brick and monolithic ladle linings designed to withstand any secondary refining, heating, rinsing, and alloying in the slag line, as well as the barrel and bottom of the ladle.

Brick and Monolithic Safety Linings

HWI provides both brick and monolithic ladle safety linings.

The three most common ladle safety lining brick designs are arch-wedge construction, which provides one of the tightest safety linings; book-tile construction, which gives added protection against steel penetration; and semi-universal construction, which is easy and quick to install.

Monolithic safety linings are installed either by casting or shotcreting. The casting method delivers a very compact and geometrically precise safety lining but requires a shop-specific mandrel for casting. Shotcreting is a form-free method that is not as precise. However, the final geometry can be improved using a half-inch layer of dry vibratable to separate the shotcrete safety lining from the working lining.

Brick and Monolithic Working Linings

HWI provides brick and monolithic ladle working linings, selected on the basis of operating conditions and slag compatibility.

A major advantage of brick working linings is that the ladle can be returned to service quickly after relining because the refractory requires only a short time for dryout.

Monolithic working linings require a properly designed form, and time and facilities for curing and drying before the ladle can be put into service. A key benefit of monolithic working linings is that a worn-out lining can be resurfaced, which reduces downtime.

HWI also offers all of the necessary special assemblies, including bottom assemblies, tilt bricks, starter sets, well blocks, pocket blocks, stir plugs, and lip retention systems.  In many cases the specific designs are custom made to fit individual steel shop ladle sizes and metallurgical conditions.
