Rotary kilns transfer products while providing a heat transfer in a very abrasive, thermally stressed environment. Chemical attack from fuels and raw materials, as well as mechanical stress from rotating elements, challenges refractories on many fronts.

Refractory bricks used in rotary lime kilns must meet these challenges as well as help conserve energy. Minimizing heat losses through the kiln shell can help lime producers achieve production efficiencies that are essential in today’s competitive markets. Heat loss through the kiln shell is of growing concern to lime kiln operators. For this reason, dual linings are often used.

HarbisonWalker International offers THERMAX® and Rib Back brick. Both have hollowed-out cold faces that help provide insulation, thereby giving our customers cooler shell temperatures.

Tumblers are precast or cast in place and are installed in lime rotary kilns to “agitate” the load. This provides improved heat transfer and lime quality. Abrasion resistance is the key when selecting a refractory for this application. VERSAFLOW® 80 C PLUS provides superior abrasion resistance to sliding material but also outstanding resistance to impact from falling coarse feed material.
