Innovation is Open at HWI

Jun 28, 2017 / Uncategorized

Don Abrino / ATRC

At HWI we pride ourselves on being thought leaders, researchers, tech geeks, and innovators. That’s why we have made a purposeful commitment to “Open Innovation” — to further harness and integrate external technology advancements and bring new refractory solutions to our customers and the refractory market. Driving us forward is long-time HWI employee Don Abrino as the newly-named senior director, External Technology and Open Innovation.

In his new role, Abrino will create the environment and systems at HWI to provide insight on technology trends, identify and evaluate outside technologies and future business opportunities, and establish strategic collaborations and partnerships with universities, research institutes, other companies, customers, suppliers, and other HWI partners.

Open Innovation is a concept defined by Dr. Henry Chesbrough in 2003 as “the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate internal innovation and expand the markets for external use of innovation.”

Today and moving forward, open innovation at HWI offers additional new ways for us to lead the industry and better serve our customers.
