Carbon black production plants need refractory products that help produce the highest quality carbon black in the most efficient way possible. HarbisonWalker International’s carbon black refractory products have been used by carbon black manufacturers to supply a variety of grades of carbon black to the tire, industrial rubber, plastics and inks, and coatings industries.
Carbon Black Refractory Linings
HarbisonWalker International’s engineered refractory lining solutions make it possible to operate reactors at higher temperatures and produce a greater volume of carbon black to address the high demand in today’s market.
Carbon black is a raw material produced when waste petroleum oil is fed into very high-temperature reactors under reducing conditions operating at a minimum of 1787° C.
We offer a wide range of alumina brick for carbon black reactor barrel linings, as well as complex shape geometries for carbon black reactor choke linings. Refractory lining reliability is created by using refractory brick that are resistant to extreme operating temperatures and that are resistant to thermal shock generated from daily changes to carbon black grades within the same reactor.
Our firebrick offerings are based on three major HWI product families — TUFLINE®, RUBY® and AUREX®. Each offers high-temperature refractory lining stability plus thermal-shock resistance rarely found in other refractory products.
Benefits of HWI Firebrick for Carbon Black Plants:
- High-temperature lining stability
- Reliability at extreme operating temperatures
- Thermal-shock resistance during reactor feed changes
- Complex shape geometries to improve reactor performance
- Increased service life

The greater the chromia content in the brick, the greater the resistance to extreme operating temperatures, resulting in longer brick life for refractories in carbon black plants.
