Pension and Benefits

Pension and Retirement Benefits

The South Shore active employee pension costs are almost double compared to the company’s 18 other plants’ active employee pension costs.

Compared to other HWI plants, South Shore employee pension benefits are the highest, and are among the top in medical benefits.

Healthcare for active employees who are eligible for the retiree benefit in the future costs $3,200 per employee, with the vast majority of that cost paid for by HWI.

Of HWI’s 19 total manufacturing plants, South Shore employees are the only workers who receive healthcare coverage from HWI after they retire, as stipulated by its current labor contract. The latest proposed contract by HWI would still provide retiree healthcare for those current retirees.

Current employees who retire prior to November 1, 2016, would still be eligible for retiree healthcare. New hires would not be eligible for retiree healthcare under the company’s current proposal.

Healthcare Benefits

South Shore employees’ active medical coverage is among the top three most expensive plans HWI offers across all of its plants and locations.

South Shore employees currently contribute 9% single and 3% family of the total cost of the plan for their healthcare coverage, totaling $50/month per employee, regardless of the plan option. The regional average is 26% single and 34% family, or $112 single or $394 family per month.

The current and proposed benefit package for South Shore employees and their families includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, sickness and accident insurance for up to 52 weeks, pension and 401(k).
