SPAR 110 Series: Balancing Abrasion Resistance, Insulation and Lightweight Performance in FCCU Applications

In fluid catalytic cracking units (FCCUs), refractory linings must withstand abrasive operating conditions while providing effective thermal insulation and minimizing the mechanical load on equipment. For refineries, selecting the right refractory solution requires balancing these competing performance demands with the structural considerations of elevated process equipment.

HWI, A member of Calderys, offers the SPAR 110 series of refractory materials to help address these challenges. Designed for applications such as FCCU riser and transfer lines, SPAR 110 products combine abrasion resistance, insulating properties, and lower installed weight to support demanding refinery operations.

Balancing Performance and Installed Weight

Refractory linings in FCCU risers, transfer lines, and other abrasive areas must provide reliable protection against material wear while maintaining the thermal performance required for the application. Dual-component lining systems can deliver higher levels of abrasion resistance and insulation, but their additional mass can create significant mechanical stress on elevated equipment and supporting structures. They can also require additional installation time and coordination, increasing overall installation complexity.

The 110 pcf refractory category offers a versatile solution by combining abrasion resistance and insulating properties within a single material system. These products can meet insulation requirements while withstanding demanding service conditions, providing an effective balance of thermal performance and durability.

For refiners, this balance is particularly important in elevated FCCU equipment, where reducing refractory mass can help limit mechanical loading while still addressing critical lining performance requirements.

SPAR 110: A Proven Brand with Expanded Installation Options

HWI’s SPAR product line builds on an established brand with a history of market acceptance and recognition among refinery customers, and is already included on specifications at major refining companies.

Building on this foundation, HWI has focused on developing and validating the properties of the newly transferred SPAR 110 products to align with industry requirements and customer specifications. This work reinforces HWI’s commitment to delivering refractory solutions that meet the technical demands of modern refining operations.

The SPAR 110 portfolio also offers flexibility across installation methods. With gun, cast, and pumpable formulations, HWI can support contractor and installer preferences while addressing project-specific installation requirements. The availability of a pumpable option is a notable advantage in a market where not all competing product lines offer the same range of installation methods.

SPAR 110 Product Portfolio

HWI’s SPAR 110 series includes three formulations designed to accommodate different installation methods and performance requirements.

  • SPARFIRE 110 G — Gun Grade

Developed for gunning applications, SPARFIRE 110 G offers a density below 120 pcf and abrasion resistance of 11 cc. The product is PLUS rated, supporting its position as an option for applications requiring a balance of abrasion resistance, insulation, installation efficiency, and accelerated dry-out capabilities.

  • SPARCAST 110 C — Cast Grade

Designed for cast-in-place installation, SPARCAST 110 C provides a density below 120 pcf and abrasion resistance of 11 cc. Its ADTECH rating supports its use in applications where the specified performance requirements and casting method align.

  • SPARCAST 110 P — Pumpable Grade

SPARCAST 110 P extends the portfolio to pumpable installations, with a density below 116 pcf and abrasion resistance of 12 cc. Also ADTECH rated, this formulation provides an additional installation option for contractors and refiners seeking to balance material performance with application flexibility.

Together, these products give HWI customers access to gun, cast, and pumpable solutions within the SPAR 110 family.

Supporting Refinery Requirements and Specifications

Product selection for FCCU applications depends on operating conditions, equipment design, installation requirements and applicable refinery specifications. HWI’s SPAR 110 development efforts are focused on ensuring the product portfolio aligns with industry expectations, including requirements associated with major players in global and U.S. energy sectors.

The combination of established brand recognition, a range of installation methods, and a focus on specification compliance positions SPAR 110 as a practical option for refiners and refractory contractors evaluating solutions for risers, transfer lines and other abrasive FCCU areas.

As with any refractory system, final material selection should be based on the specific application’s operating conditions, performance criteria and approved specifications.
