HWI, A member of Calderys, participated in the Brimstone Sulfur Symposium 2025, held September 8–12 in Vail, Colorado — a premier event bringing together global experts in Sulfur Recovery Units (SRUs) and sulfur technologies.
This year, HWI Application Specialist, Daniel Starr, co-authored a technical paper with Jacob Dupree (J.T. Thorpe & Son, Inc.) entitled:
“Refractory Performance in Evolving SRU Conditions”
SRU equipment operates under high temperatures and chemically aggressive environments, where refractory linings act as the primary line of defense. In his paper, Daniel explores emerging industry trends — including:
- Higher operating temperatures driven by increasing SRU capacities
- Hydrogen-rich fuels impacting combustion processes
- Advanced burner systems creating localized densification risks
- Thermal cycling from frequent startups and shutdowns are placing new demands on refractory linings and influencing their performance, durability, and service life.
The paper also emphasizes the critical importance of refractory design. For example, the choice between Insulating Firebrick (IFB) and castable backup lining systems directly impacts thermal gradients, mechanical stability, and energy efficiency.
“SRUs are evolving, and so must our understanding of refractory design,” says Daniel Starr. “Selecting the right materials and configurations today is essential for optimizing reliability, extending unit life, and avoiding costly failures.”
We had a blast engaging with industry peers at the symposium, sharing our insights, and exploring how HWI’s innovative refractory solutions support customers in adapting to changing operational conditions.
