Sulfur recovery plants at oil and natural gas refineries need refractory solutions to insulate thermal reactors in Sulfur Recovery Units (SRU) in the high-temperature conversion of sulfur waste from refined oil to elemental sulfur used for manufacturing fertilizer.
Sulfur Recovery Units Refractory Solutions
As an international leader in refractories for SRUs, HarbisonWalker International’s refractory products ensure that SRU reaction furnaces operate reliably when faced with high temperatures, increased throughput, and harsh, corrosive environments.
Di-Hydrogen-Sulfide and sour water are stripped from hydrocarbon products in other units of the refinery and routed through the SRU to be converted to elemental sulfur. Without this conversion, the sulfur oxides would be expelled into the air after incineration, resulting in acid rain and various health issues. The main focus of the SRU, the reaction furnace, burns part of the feed at temperatures up to 2800°F. The gases then pass through a series of converters and condensers that convert the acid gases to elemental sulfur and condense them to liquid. This method is known as the Claus process.
HarbisonWalker International offers a full portfolio of high-temperature alumina firebricks as well as lightweight brick and castables for efficient and reliable insulation, high temperature creep resistance, and corrosion prevention. To be sure your SRUs are operating optimally, we can provide a detailed heat transfer analysis to ensure that shell temperatures are at the necessary level.
